I should add, we're fortunate to live in the Seattle area where hiking trails, the mountains, the lakes, the ski resorts, the rivers are accessible within 30mins-2 drive from the city. You can even mountain bike, rock climb, hike or ski after office hours, and come back the same day. Huh?

Wallace Falls, Gold Bar, WA This hike is classified by Inside Out Washington - Best Places book (Ron Judd) as "moderately difficult". He states "everyone should haul themselves up to Wallace Falls at least once. Visible from US Highway 2 in the winter, the falls have been luring Stevens Pass travelers for decades. From a trailhead in Wallace Falls State Park just north of Gold Bar, the path climbs fairly steeply, coming to a fork. The trail offers 2 routes, left route follows an old railroad grade to the top, it's mile longer but a bit easier on the lungs. The right fork is the direct route, painful if you're not in shape. The falls is arguably the most magnificent in the Cascades. The mist is a great elixir." This is a 1.5 hr drive E of Seattle. Total hiking trip only took 5 hrs. (includes trip back to Seattle) Rowena M.
