    • Dear Unidentified: I labeled that particular photo made at the Katchikally Crocodile Pool "Black Egret" based on photo-matching with the bookA FIELD GUIDE TO BIRDS OF THE GAMBIA AND SENEGAL by Clive Barlow, Tim Wacher and Tony Disley produced by Pica Press, Sussex (c) 1997. The only black heron is sometimes the Western Reef Heron which has some white on his neck and a yellow beak--which this bird does not have. So based on the book, I am keeping the "Black Egret" identification on this photo. But thanks very much for your interest and input! • Black heron. Only white colored heron (Great White and Snowy) is called egret.

    • John, Sorry it was December before I saw your note here. I saw this bird in Gambia River near Janjanbureh. You didn't include your e-mail address so I can write. But write me about what you saw on your December trip! charlie@charliedoggett.ne t

    • Hi Charlie I thought you would like to know that your picture of 'purple heron swimming' is actually an African finfoot, one of the most difficult birds to find in Gambia! It would be great if you could post (or e-mail back) where it was. I'll be searching for finfoots in Gambia in December & any clue to their whereabouts would be a big help. Best wishes John
