Randy, Seeing your beautiful pictures of NM inspires me to mention a very special author named Edward Abbey. Abbey was a park ranger in Arches Natl. Monument back when that park was little visited. There's too much to say about him (here). He's a (very descriptive) nature writer, philosophical writer, and a bit cantankerous. Has quite a following of admirers, (include me). He writes in defense of not spoiling the beautiful landscape of the American West, while claiming not to be an environmentalist. His most well-known book is "Desert Solitare." Another good one is "The Journey Home." (And, to my surprise, there's a picture of him at work on WS's >> search: Edward Abbey). I also include here a fine website to explore what Abbey is all about.
