I take it you call the plants in the foreground poppies, though they are not Papaver but Eschscholtzia -- which are in the Papaver family. and are endemic to the North American West Coast. In Europe they are called 'sleeping hat' undoubtedly because of the hallucinogenic properties of the seed...
