Incredible photos. Each photo brought out a flood of emotions and memories from my own childhood in the '50 and '60. I lived in a different part of the world, but this could have been my neighborhood. I wish the photos were dated though. Thanks for sharing.

My Dear Leon, I doubt I shall be ever able to put into written words just how these Portrait Images have deeply impacted into my heart & spirit! These Images should be on Show at The Tate Gallery or simaler to it.. & I'm deadly serious when it comes to This field of Photograhy, which you have Mastered into a Fine Art. Hi Leon, Thank you for your message. I think you are right, B&W has its own mood, but appreciating this mood isn't always obvious. If you are not used to it, it's like learning to enjoy a new type of music. Orly

Hello Leon and thank you so much for you very kind remarks about my Five Minutes from home album. I am still very new at this but Peter is teaching me well. I was interested to look at this album of yours because I was born not far from Nottingham in Retford. It is distressing to hear that it is such a violent city now. Peter has just called out to me to ask you if The Olde Salutation Inn and the Trip to Jerusalem are still flourishing! (This must be a part of his past I don't know about - hmmmmmm!) Thanks again, Betty

Hi Leon, I really have enjoyed this journey through a city I worked in a few times. I was involved in murder enquiries that took me to Nottingham as the supects fled there to hide out.It is still very violent with "black on black" crime (I was investigating drug dealers that were shooting each other)I truly hope it improves as it is a beautiful city with some lovely people. Thanks for the journey through time. Wow, Leon, this album is an eye-opener. The story told probably happens in cities around the world - but it is more comfortable to not think about it. I live in Michigan and we have Detroit across the state - a huge crime rate and a place to stay away from after dark. Such a pity that lives are being thrown away. Your album says many things - but to me mostly tells it as it was, back then, and continues on and on. I like the B&W photos. - Best regards, DeeAnne

Hello Leon; The children we see here are timeless they exist it every country,no matter how well developed. We walk by and take no notice of the lost children ,just ask what could have happen to our youth, where did we go wrong? Our cities are full of forgotten souls, living on streets under cardboard boxes with little to eat or care about or where abuse is always at hand....As you can see this album has made my heart hurt and right now I can't help but shed tears. Still I hope that you photos will be seen by more people, and that will take a look at themselves and maybe help where they can. Loietta

Leon you captured the rawness that is found on many streets around the world. The word pathos comes to mind. The will to survive no matter what, is what keeps so many people going and is the basis of the British peoples character. I know, I am an ex-Brit. The photo's sadden me, and yet from those humble beginnings, many great people will emerge and accomplish incredible things in life. God Bless them all. Thank you for sharing this album with us and congratulations on being featured. The world does need to see this. Mouse

I don't think I have the words to describe the feelings this album brings to my heart, Leon, it is what everyone else has said and so much more. Could have been 1944, or 1934, or any age. It is timeless. You have captured it all in the truest way possible. These must be published to be viewed by everyone.

Leon an expressive album of a time that was called 'the winter of discontent'. Congratulations on the feature, it should be in the history section or even the photographic archives somewhere. One of our political commentators is just doing a 5 week series on TV of the history of post war Britain. Rivetting for me as I think, hell I lived through that! Luckily for me I was working in the warmth of Africa during the period you show. Eric

Leon - what a deeply moving album! The black & white media, when used, helped convey the message, set the mood, and highten the experience. Each photograph, well composed, tells the story, most of the time words are even superfluous. Been a long while since an album has left such a impression on me, well done. Hi, Leon, I went to Manning Grammar, 70-75, and had to walk to Noel Street Baths on many a glum morning. Seeing your photos has brought back many memories fo me. I, too, do not remember the violence of the city. I always knew it existed but was lucky never to experience it. We knew we were poor but we worked hard for what we got and never thought to commit violence to get it. I've been 'home' many times since leaving in '82 but never feel I want to go back to live. Parts of it are unrecognisable to me. It remains a marvellously historic city but the pride of 'coming from Nottingham' has sadly diminshed over the years. Thank you for posting this album.

A work of committed, historically important photojournalism that ranks with the best of the urban genre. Powerful stuff, indeed. The young girl in "The eyes are the windows of the soul" puts me in mind of National Geographic's famous green-eyed Afghan maiden.

Leon, thank you for sharing this most moving album. So many of us have never had to experience the hopelessness and loss you have captured in your images. I hope all those beautiful children were able to grow up healthy and whole and have good full lives.

I think you learn how to survive at a certain mental level, which emotionally separates your soul from a comparison with Paradise...allow you to keep a shred of sanity amidst chaos. Cochabamba was that way the summer I was there around 1969...Bolivia has never been real settled...even today.

Great album, but what an ugly depressing place to be raised in, no wonder so many kids grew up violent, they were trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty

Hi Leo...what a surprise for me to see my Hometown in Featured Albums!...I agree with your album comment, it didn't seem like a violent place whilst i was living there full time 1964-1994 and i lived in the Meadows, St Anns and Sneinton areas!...Working abroad now but still have a house in Nottingham...I will have to have a more detailed look at this album, just in case i recognise anyone or anything...regards...Grah am

Hello Leon, I remember your City during those years, BUT as you say NOW one hears on the Media what happens there, with all the street crime it is never of the TV or out of the Papers. You have done a great job with these old B&W pics they bring out the true starkness o
