Album Description:
The Kea is essentially a ground bird or that is certainly where they prefer to spend the majority of their time often entertaining any humans present with their sideways hopping. But when airborne, they are magnificent fliers.

Great album - I didn't know any parrot lived in an alpine habitat - I have an African Grey - more entertaining than any other pet I've ever had!

This is a fantastic set of photos! You have to love that cheeky, mischievous little imp. I always think it is a bird of surprises. It looks quite plain from some angles. Then it opens its wings....

Aw great.... NOW I have to go to New Zealand! I will add it to my (ever growing) list of places to travel. Your pictures are simply stunning, both in quality and in subject. Keas are such a beautiful, ancient species of parrot, and as a bird-watcher, I can only hope the the government of New Zealand continues to protect their habitat.

You've done a yeoman's job of documenting this wonderful species, and it's beauty is enough to preserve for future generations. When will we learn that we cannot remove precious species from the planet without repercussion? Haven't learned this important lesson yet, I'm afraid. Fred

Hi Bernard: indeed very unusual to find a parrot species at this altitude, and behaving as a predatory! Excellent pictures! Also, the subject is so interesting for naturalists that it would certainly be worth organising car excursions in that region...?! - Kind ragards!

"....mainly of r" rodents? I am quite familiar with a kea ........because the name crops up so often in the cross-word puzzles! Now I know what one looks like.
