I guess that a little bit of wife swapping would create some heavyu tension in the area. Maybe after ten or twenty years, such a thing would be considered normal.

Hi John, another good album. Polly certainly looked as if she was enjoying herself. I must admit, I didn't know who Alan Hinkes was either, so a lesson for me as well. Best wishes, Dave L.

Hi John Splendid album as always, some great shots and meeting a mountaineering legend - some day you had! All the best Dave D

It looked a cold windy walk, but you were obviously well equipped and thanks for telling us about Alan ( and how to spot him)Sue

A great album John. I wouldn't have recognised Alan Hinkes but I think I have been to one of his lectures. Jill

Brilliant pictures John. Glad Polly didn't go much closer to that cornice. Jayne

Andrew, Alan Hinkes is the first (and so far, the only) British climber to climb all 14 of the world's 8,000 metre peaks. He finished his round on Kanchenjunga a couple of years ago. Alison Hargreaves might have beaten him to it had she not died on K2 a few months after climbing Everest.

I feel rather small at not knowing who Alan Hinkes is to be honest! He sounds like a typical British "jolly good fellow". Anyone wanting to disappear off the east side of Helvellyn over a snow cornice must be mad, or worth knowing! You get to do some great walks, wish I was there. Cheers, Andrew.

Dear John, Thanks so much for showing us these pictures from today Knowing there was so much snow on Helvellyn I wondered all week if you would get up there. Lucky you to meet Alan too Its a walk I'm sure you'll remember. Take care now, Jill

Sadly, no, Jo. Polly seemed in awe of the great man and his companions. Actually I think it was because they ate standing up whereas Polly prefers to beg from people who are down at her level!

Great photos, John. Sure looked cold up there! Did Polly manage to beg the odd titbit from Alan Hinkes' entourage?! Jo

Great pictures from a fantastic walk John. I wish it had been as bright at lower altitude in the south of the county. Dave B (ofc)
