  • Now, for the educational part : Cypresses are able to live in standing water because of their unique trunk & root structures. Many of the largest trunks are actually hollow up past the water level. The roots form 'knees' which stick up out of the water. Both of these features help the trees obtain oxygen to keep them from drowning. Because the knees are vital to the trees existence, and because the trees are now a threatened & protected species, cutting the knees (or the trees) is now illegal. Gone are the days you could buy cypress knee tables, lamps or other souvenirs.
