Comments on 5 Points --- Ele Gulbrandsen'52 This picture is of where I grew up. The 5 Points were Charles St, Broadway, Martin Av, Charles St(again), Newburg Rd. They all came together right there. Between Broadway and Martin Av was an open field before becoming Baxter's Farm Supply. Between Martin Av and Charles St was the Lovera Inn. Behind Lovera's was Mrs Cole's Junk yard. Next, between Charles St and Newburg was Lindquist Royal Blue Store.(Large single dip ice cream cones for a nickle.) They carried people on credit until they could pay. Also cashed in R par-t-pack bottles and free ice cream bar sticks.(remember them) Next on the circle between Newburg and Charles were the Log Cabins (hence the name of Log Cabin Arbor). They were the High spot on the Points. The first Cabin was a small restaurant owned by Mr & Mrs. Funk with a counter and two booths. They had the best hamburgers around plus you could get a double dip ice cream cone (two different flavors if you asked nice) for a nickle. The second Cabin was a gas station where all the kids used to go to get there bike tires pumped up. Remember Ballon tires on bikes? Last but not least between Charles and Broadway there was a rootbeer stand called "The Point" where you would get free pretzels with your root beer. I lived a half a block away and it is the most important place in the whole area. It was like a village unto its self.

Great pictures. I use to live in log cabin arbor on Sovereign Blvd. My father, Paul Parker, built our home there in the early 50s. I think you know my father and mother, Doris. They are now living in FL.

Dale Lindquist'52' The 5 Points pictures bring back many memories. I carried drinking water to Mrs. Cole from age 12 to about age 15. I also worked for her when she needed parts removed for customers. My first car was a 1934 Chevy and I repaired it sometimes using the parts I bought from her. The Royal Blue store was owned by Dick Nelson. They had penny candy. so it was easy for my parents to send me for milk and bread. I believe Dick's folks owned the store originally. My father and Dick's brother Clair owned a 1949 Air Coupe airplane during the 50's. Funk's, of course was a favorite hang out during my early teens. One of my favorite things was to buy a whole pint of ice cream for 20 cents. It was never quite the same after they built the new building. When I graduated from high school I worked part time for Wayne Crotzer at the Texaco station on the point between Charles and Broadway. The neighbor kids and I all walked or rode bikes to Buckbee school using Alpine Rd. Having Alpine park close by was great. We played there both summer and winter. My folks house was the last house on the south side of Broadway before the point. When I come back to Rockford now the traffic at 5 points makes it hard to look around very much. Thanks a bunch for sharing your photos.
