This shot -not on the Coral Gables Waterway at all -illustrates why we twice surprised specimens: they were submerged and unseen, probably just a few feet below us (or on their way up preparing to breathe), and as we paddled over them, our shadows or paddles spooked them. They bolted, and nearly overturned me 2 years ago in 2000, and "merely" surprised us in 2002, at just about the same spot. Yeah, I know: so don't paddle there!
