That is one of my favorite spots. My husband and I have very fond memories of sitting in that very spot and watching the water/waves hit the beach with the Lighthouse on the cliff. We have always felt that the name was made just for us....as I was VERY dissapointed that he did not kiss me at that spot when we were dating. He was too much of a gentleman and I was not being very lady like. <grin> Thanks for the memory. Debbie in WA

My wife and I got married at Cape Blanco lighthouse on the southern tip of Oregon (near Port Orford). You truly cannot get a better feel for how beautiful it is to capture such romance and breathtaking scenery. This is an award winning picture for sure!!

IN addition, it is located at the mouth of the columbia river of washington state - Ilwaco Washington- across from Astoria Oregon from clatsop oregon. This is indeed a Historical state park- named after ships who did not make it thru the mouth of the columbia- seeing no opportunity to see a passage thru the mouth- thru a telescope on a ship- it looked disappointing to a captain- 1870- many many ships arrived and many many have sunk in this very trecherous spot because of the sand bars - thus later on 1950;s created the jettys. Now- this is the passage that brings all the goods thru from the pacific ocean into our dry lands. I live here and work here. A wonderful place to visit- misery of weather- therfore also named by lewis and clark and to be remained in the books of history- Cape disappointment. It is not national park but state- should be national based on its history. Go see it- people from all over the world visit this quaint exploring daring place- if you can stand the weather.

I worked here and am from here! It is worth the trip also cause it is landmark of the lewis and Clark trail- the last stop before Clatsop. Cape disappointment has ALOT of history and means exactly what it means in 1870 before lewis and clark even arrived. Ships came here before this history and was named because of the mouth of the columbia did not speak- it so seemed ended so seemed to be no passage. lewis and clark arrived thru the mouth and therefore called it as it was - dismal nitch and very miserable weather. Excellent pic and place to visit.

I've seen several photos of Cape Disappointment State Park, particularly the photogenic North Head Lighthouse, --but this is, far and away, the most dramatic -- and an extremely worthy POTD! THANK YOU! Ray

Congratulations on this picture and on being selected as the POTD! It certainly merits the honor. It is very dramatic and has wonderful light/dark values. The surf in the foreground dominates, showing us the power and majesty of the ocean. Yet, there is man's hand in it--the lighthouse, a sentinel overlooking the scene from the massive hill.
