A stark view of the former Ponderosa Pine forest, which only gets worse on the ridge tops. It burned so hot in 1989 that seeds from cones have not re-germinated. In comparison, at Fort Robinson -- now a state park and certainly NOT a wilderness -- seeds were planted and the trees are coming back strong.
