18 February 2006 - Lake Merritt, Oakland, California. Usually I prefer images that show the whole bird, but I couldn't resist this head portrait of an adult Black-crowned Night-Heron with its bulging red eye. This image is uncropped and no sharpening filters have been applied. However, the image has been resized and slight contrast adjustment was made in Photoshop.
