Album Info:
(5481) 6-11-2007 Male Harlequin Duck in the shallows of the Kenai River (they were working on the boat docks at the campground we spend our summers at), when the Harlequin Duck swam over to investigate, it seemed very interested in all the commotion. Usually found in small flocks, prefers very turbulent water on rocky coasts moving inland to swift mountain streams for breeding. The breeding male is slate blue with bright chestnut flanks, with bold white markings on the head and wings outlined in black. The female and non-breeding male are dark brown with two or three small white patches on the sides of the head. It dives to the bottom using both feet and wings to forage for snails, crabs, small fish and aquatic insects.
