PS: please remove all this if it resembles "spam." I'm a member of the "special forces" of the Marine Corp. (in my imagination), so I'm impervious to pain! :)

Great shot - all subjects included! <> Re: Mountain Man: Jedediah "Strong" Smith (1798-1831), American fur trapper and explorer. Jedediah Strong Smith was born in Bainbridge, New York. He became a fur trapper in the West as a young man and in the last six years of his life earned a place as one of the greatest pathfinders in American history. In 1826 he ventured southwest with a party of 17 from Great Salt Lake in search of trade routes (for fur-trapping rights) to California and the Northwest. After crossing the Mojave Desert, he reached Mission San Gabriel, California, near present-day Los Angeles, probably the first white to reach California from the East. Sent away by the Spanish governor, who was suspicious of Smith, he proceeded north, becoming the first American to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains; proceeding northeast across present-day Nevada, he became the first white to cross the Great Salt Lake Desert. Upon returning (1827) to California, ten of his men were killed by Native Americans; in 1828 Native Americans killed most of his party on an expedition to Fort Vancouver (now Vancouver, Washington). Smith was later killed by the Comanche on the Santa Fe Trail.
