The Playa extends from near Gerlach, NV, north about 25 miles and is 15 miles wide at it's widest. There is no vegetation on the 10,000 ft. deep silt bed, which is so flat that the curvature of the earth can be seen. The Playa and the Black Rock Desert of which the Playa is a part, are remnants of ancient Lake Lahontan, which covered the area with 500 feet of water 60,000 years ago.
