Album Info:

18 May 2007 - Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, Ohio This male perched on a martin house near the headquarters. It is presumably of the widespread Eastern subspecies P. s. subis. These large swallows frequently nest in martin houses designed for them. In the East adaptation to such artificial houses has allowed the species to thrive despite the presence of introduced European Starlings. Unfortunately birds breeding in the far West such as California seldom use martin houses and they have been severely impacted by competition from introduced starlings. Canon PowerShot S3 IS 12x
