Blue-winged Kookaburra
frankmcdonald2 (Premium member) > albums > Frank McDonald - September 2008
Album Info:
Townsville, Queensland, Australia. This bird was surveying the recently mown backyard for insects and lizards from the vantage point of a clothes line. They will perch fairly close to humans but despite this one's fearsome look, they are generally not aggressive. Some diffusion was applied in Photoshop.

What a little beauty. I never knew much about the kookaburra, other than they live down under and they're actually a species of kings fisher. We do have a few varieties of kings fishers here in the States, but nothing as brilliantly colored as this little visitor you had the day of this shot.

We have brown sparrows & crows in our back yard. Oh yes, seagulls, but the seagulls never stop in my city yard.
said kaye444
Great Shot. A guy across the road from me has them land on his arm and he hands feeds them raw minced meat. But the ones here are not blue but brown. I live in Perth, Australia and every morning I hear them call out loudly as the sun rises.

O! It's great photo. I am living in Southport QLD near small forest, and I often hear those birds, but I have never see them outside (only at pictures and in zoo). I was looking for photo like this. Thank you. I sow birds like this but more little size and a bit brighter in russian forest. They are named "halcyons".

Townsville brings back memories of my tanker days many moons ago! I remember walking through the sugar cane field taking a short cut. I was later told that there were dangerous snakes in the field!!!! This is quite an exotic looking bird, very colourful with an interesting beak! Excellent capture and presentation! Congratulations on this being featured here on the front page of Webshots! Regards from Paul.
