Album Info:

Tshukudu Lodge, Genius Loci, near Pretoria, South Africa July 18, 2007. English names vary and include "Stone Chat," "Common Stonechat," and "Stonechat" in addition to "African Stonechat" used by SASOL, probably based on splitting the African birds from the others, but still retaining the original Linnaean name. This attractive species is something of a taxonomic nightmare with proposals to split it into up to three (European, African and Siberian) species and with no fewer than 24 subspecies currently recognized. This bird was first described by Linnaeus based on a specimen from South Africa, rather than Europe. However, Clements suppresses that name, calling African Stonechat S. axillaris; and changing the gender of the Eurasian Common Stonechat to S. torquata. HBW and Howard & Moore leave the complex as a single species (Common Stonechat) and retain the old spelling. Following HBW, this is probably nominate S. t. torquatus. Canon PowerShot S3IS.
