Album Info:
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa, July 31, 2007. Previously I posted a photo of the virens subspecies of Cape White-eye, which has its underparts all yellow. This individual represents the very different race, capensis confined to the Cape Region, and which has a gray breast and belly. White-eyes have been placed in their own family, the Zosteropidae. However recent genetic research merges them with the Babblers (Timaliidae). For discussion of this taxonomic change see Roberson: http://montereybay.com/crea grus/babblers.html Roberts (citing unpublished genetic data) and SASOL, split the Cape White-eye from the Orange River White-eye. Under this taxonomy, the Cape White-eye becomes Z. virens and Z. pallidus applies only to Orange River White-eye. Four (Clements) to six (Howard & Moore) subspecies are recognized but neither authority adopts the split of Orange River White-eye. Thus this individual is either Z. p. capensis (no split) or Z. v. capensis (with split). Canon PowerShot S3IS.
