Album Info:

(DSC05332) At the Oceanarium "Laot" (Fishing Grounds): Porcupinefish or "Buteteng Laot" (Diodon nicthemerus); lives in the circumtropical region; occurs in open muddy substrates as well as on coral reefs; is about 50 cm & with a lifespan of 12-15 years. Diet consists of mollusks, urchins, hermit crabs & crabs. These fish are also commonly called blowfish. They are sometimes confused with pufferfish but porcupine fish have the ability to inflate their body by swallowing water to become round like a ball. This increase in size reduces the range of potential predators to those with much bugger mouths. A second defense mechanism is provided by the sharp spines which radiate outwards when the fish is inflated. (Taken from the adjacent tank signage)
