(074) 6-11-2007 Harlequin Duck on the Kenai River, Alaska. Usually found in small flocks, prefers very turbulent water on rocky coasts moving inland to swift mountain streams for breeding. The breeding male is slate blue with bright chestnut flanks, with bold white markings on the head and wings outlined in black. The female and non-breeding male are dark brown with two or three small white patches on the sides of the head. It dives to the bottom using both feet and wings to forage for snails, crabs, small fish and aquatic insects.
