Salt Creek begins from seepages that collect to form the meandering, mud-bottomed creek. The upper reaches of the creek contain surface water only during the winter and spring. This section, which originates at 60 m below sea level, traverses Mesquite Flat for 1-2 km before abruptly entering a narrow, shallow canyon.
