GOLDEN-HEADED MANAKIN (Pipra erythrocephala erythrocephala)

Album Info:
09 January 2007 - Asa Wright Nature Center, Trinidad http://www.asawright.org/ Manakin s are small, compact forest birds in the family Pipridae. Males exhibit elaborate courtship displays in groups called "leks." These manakins display well above the ground on horizontal branches. Displays include a Michael Jackson style "moonwalk" in which the bird slides sideways or backwards very rapidly along the perch with its short tail raised and wings fluttering. This is the nominate race which ranges through northern South America and Trinidad, but not on Tobago. Another subspecies further south has a duller yellow, less golden, colored head. Their constant jumping activity and poor light conditions, resulted in disappointing photos. This was the best I could do. Photo is resized, but uncropped. Olympus D-550z / Nikon FieldScope 3 / 30XWA (hand-held - no adapter).
