Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias herodias)

Album Info:
17 January 2006 - Paradise Pond, Port Aransas, Texas It was very windy this day, but we found shelter at the Joan & Scott Holt Paradise Pond; a nicely wooded freshwater pond with boardwalk at the north end of Mustang Island. I liked the bright blue lores and reddish bill on this Great Blue Heron. These colors characterizes breeding adults over much of North America, but fade soon after egg laying. It is interesting that in Florida (subspecies A. h. occidentalis), the lores are bright lime-green; and in British Columbia (subspecies A. h. fannini), the lores are blue-green.
