Album Info:

This is a image of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse when the main Fresnel lens is lit. Pigeon Point Lighthouse sits on a cliff above the California coast 50 or so miles south of San Francisco. The lighthouse is 115 ft tall. Most people, including myself think this lighthouse had one main beam. Not so, Pigeon Point Lighthouse has 24 beams when lit as she was originally designed to be. The lighthouse beams spread out in a starburst pattern around the lighthouse as the main lens rotates. The Pigeon Point Lighthouse is named after a clipper ship that ran aground and sank on the nearby reef that sits just under the water level named the Carrier Pigeon on her maiden voyage. Pigeon Point Lighthouse is in desperate need of funds. Please visit the Pigeon Point Lighthouse to make a contribution to its restoration. There is no other lighthouse on the California Coast nearly as beautiful as Pigeon Point. I hope you enjoy my shot of this historic lighthouse.

  • Fantastic! BTW...my son Ben lit this light for you when you took the shot. That has been one of his perks in the Coast Guard for the last several years.

  • Great shot Darvin. I really enjoy lighthouses, and have studied the fresnel lens, and this photo is a great illistration. What type of camera do you use? With a tripod? Do you remember how long this exposure was? One of those photos that happens only once in a great while. Was this during the November lighting? Do the rays only go all around during that lighting? Thanks for sharing your talent, John Best

  • I love Pigeon Point and have taken many of the same pictures that you did. The entire central and northern coast of California is the most beautiful sight and has the beautiful lighthouses.

  • This is the best shot of Pigeon Point that I have seen. I am hoping that this year I make the lighting. Maybe I'll see you there. Stan
