Album Info:

28 October 2006 - Chain of Lakes, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California. This morning I took my ornithology class to our annual Fall field trip in western Golden Gate Park. This immature Red-tailed Hawk posed for the group right at the parking lot where we met. If you look closely, you can see a metal band on the bird's right leg. We guessed that it was likely banded by the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, across the Golden Gate to the north. http://www.ggro.org/index.html Th e dark throat and heavy barring on the flanks are characteristic of the western subspecies B. j. calurus. Also notice the narrow buff fringes to the wing coverts indicating a bird in juvenal plumage. Olympus D-550z / Nikon FieldScope 3 / 30XWA (hand-held - no adapter).
