20 miles south of Furnace Creek lies Badwater, my official starting point, reached via Badwater Road and its seemingly liquifying ribbon of asphalt. This is the route of the Badwater Ultra foot race held annually in July. It too travels from the Lowest to the Highest, but the utter cruelty of its routing had in fact been my inspiration to lay out and attempt a backcountry alternative.
