Album Info:
Vicinity Edeni Lodge, Trichardtsdal, Limpopo Province, South Africa July 19, 2007. This was our first sighting of this distinctive Buteo, named for its call which resembles that of the Black-backed Jackal. It is endemic to Southern Africa but seemed to be fairly common in a variety montane habitats. Most individuals we saw, such as this one, were adults. Juveniles are rusty-brown all over. This bird is sometimes lumped with Augur Buzzard (Buteo augur) to the north which has a white breast and wing-linings and Archer's Buzzard (B. archeri) in Somalia which lacks the slate band across the belly. All three are members of a superspecies. Panasonic DMC-LZ5 / Nikon FS 3 / 30XWA / hand-held, no adapter.
