Album Info:
The blue moon had made us a little crazy, so we decided to brave the summer holiday traffic on Hwy 101, risking death from getting smashed by an oversized RV driven by a 90 year old Californian, and drove to Bandon, 25 miles north. Toward the south end of Bandon's beautiful beach lies Face Rock, as seen in this photo and which is quite famous. Legend from the Nah-So-Mah Tribe has it that Ewanua was visiting tribes on the coast with her father, Chief Siskiyou, and in celebration of their visit, a great "potlatch" (party) took place. The local tribes were in great fear of Seatka, the evil spirit of the ocean, but Ewanua and those in her tribe, who lived in the mountains, were not afraid. After the feast, while others lay sleeping, Ewanua carried her dog, Komax, and her cat and kittens in a basket and wandered down to the ocean. She danced and played with delight, and soon placed her pets in their basket on the beach and swam into the ocean, following the silver trail of the moon. Unaware of any danger, she was suddenly grabbed by a fearsome creature that came out of the water. Komax, knowing his mistress was in danger, swam out to her with the basket and bit Seatka. Howling with rage, the monster kicked off the dog and threw the cat and kittens far out to sea. He tried to get the princess to look at him, but she refused, knowing his power was in his eyes. Now, the beautiful Ewanua lies in the ocean, looking skyward, refusing to look at Seatka, who sits nearby. Her beloved Komax and her cat and kittens lie to the west, waiting in vain for their mistress to arise. So where are the dog Komax, the kittens, and Seatka? (dscn0259cs archive photo)

Patiently, she sits and waits... Perhaps one day we will see her beloved companions... Thank you for that lore... Wise were our beloved red-skinned brothers for even if they spoke in riddles we simple folk do not understand, they did, and they have explained many of the beautiful "natural" scenes that we too often take for granted... How beautiful is that??? Thank you for sharing...

What a fantastic shot of FACE ROCK, Randy! I have one of it as well, but not from this close! You have an amazing lens on your camera. I could zoom in on something like this, but it loses pixels and would not appear anything like this! Great shot! I was wondering something,, WHere abouts do you live on the Southern coast exactly? How far from Brookings are you? I miss Oregon so much, I wish more than anything I could visit again this year, as it will be a year ago the end of the month that I was there. It is so hard to believe. It seems like only a few months. I would love to come back and take the Rogue River boat ride again. THanks for sharing such incredible shots. THey really hit a soft spot with me! Your friend, Lori
