Because they resemble flattish rounds of cheeses, geomorphologists call slabs of eroded rock like these 'cheeserings'. 1700 million years ago molten magma cooled to form granite that intruded into surrounding sandstone. The granite was exposed after the original ground level dropped to where it is today to reveal weathering by ground water around subterranean cracks.
