These medium/small gulls were abundant. Some landed on the boat to feed on leftover chum. Four subspecies are recognized. Australian birds are assigned to the nominate race, L. n. novaehollandiae 27 August 2005, Tasman Sea off Wollongong, NSW, Australia.
