Note the angle of trajectory off the flat surface. The feet are kicking the surface of the water.If you could see the next few frames in a series , you would see the wing tips slapping the water and the feet extending forward. At night when you cant see them well, you can hear the tips lightly smack it and its a cool sound!I hope this will help you with future photos.The little things like this are helpful and I hope you continue to ask questions and seek facts like this in the future. As a fisherman I have seen many a brown pelican, however in this photo I have never seen a pelican as great as this one. The wing tips are up right, which one will never see with the naked eye, at the speed they fly. This is the greatest shot ever seen.
