I'm sure birds are sufficiently sentient to experience the emotion of joy, though there may not be direct evidence of it yet. I've seen some doing aerobatics from the high-wires of fences and power lines for no other apparent purpose than the sheer fun of it! This wee fella was almost certainly well and truly clean and cool but kept diving into this backyard birdbath for ages.
