Album Info:

Cape Town Pelagic, Cape Province, South Africa, August 1, 2007. Like most large gulls, Kelp Gulls take 3-4 years or longer to reach definitive adult plumage. This is a first winter bird. South African birds go by the name L. d. vetula, sometimes called Cape Gull and sometimes treated as a separate species. This split is followed by SASOL but not by Roberts or IOC. The taxonomy is complex. Traditionally, two subspecies are recognized, but Jiguet (Bulletin of the BOC 122:50-71, 2002) has suggested that there may be as many as five. Canon PowerShot S3IS.
