Album Info:

The former Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) has been split into five species as follows: 1. Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) 2. Tristan Albatross (Diomedea dabbenena) 3. Antipodean Albatross (Diomedea antipodensis) 4. Gibson's Albatross (Diomedea gibsoni) 5. Amsterdam Albatross (Diomedea amsterdamensis) On this trip, 16 Gibson's and 4 Wandering were recorded. This is a juvenile, and plumages at this stage are similar in all five forms. If I recall correctly, the leaders were able to distinguish Gibson's from Wandering by bill and head shape. Gibson's is a smaller bird with a rounder head and less robust bill. Corrections/comments welcome. 27 August 2005, Tasman Sea off Wollongong, NSW, Australia.
