Sooty Oystercatcher (Haematopus fuliginosus fuliginosus)

Album Info:
This rock loving species is similar to several other all dark oystercatchers found throughout the world. I am familiar with the Black Oystercatcher (H. bachmani) which breeds not far from where I live in California. The eye color is different though, yellow on H. bachmani and red on H. fuliginosus. Oystercatchers use their sharp outsized bills like a knife to shuck oysters and other bivalves. 28 August 2005, Bulli, NSW, Australia.
