Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis)
joemorlan > albums > Ohio-Crane Creek May 2007
Album Info:
15 May 2007 - Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, Ohio Gray Catbirds were abundant, but difficult to photograph because of their preference for deep shade. This one was attracted to some old orange halves near the parking lot that had fallen off the tree branches where they been impaled by photographers who wanted to attract Baltimore Orioles. This species is named for its catlike "mewing" call-note, but it also includes many complex phrases in its song. Often it sounds like two birds are singing at the same time, but it is actually just one bird singing two different songs simultaneously, one on each side of its syrinx. Canon PowerShot S3 IS 12x
