Congratulations on your absolutely gorgeous POTD! I love the Northern Lights, but never saw a photo so red! What a capture you got! I've heard this color is rather rare. All I've seen are shades of gray. All the best, Kathy
WoW, talk about Jack POT. Winner, LOL. Your story was a treat also. Fantastic, memorable and I am so glad you shared your treasure with us and probably would have had the same reaction.
Lucky you to see the rare red borealis!! Love the image & love the story of the shot you posted earlier. How great that you got this spectacular image to remember the moment!
Thanks everyone, but I really got lucky for being at the right place at the right time. Wish I could do that for the rest of my life but I will take this one. Ha! I was really trying to show some friends the planet Neptune that evening. They kept asking me what was the light to the North and I told them it was just the KCI airport and to let me concentrate on the planet at hand. Their persistence prevailed as I rose up in frustration from my scope and turned only to have my voice crack and I started to scream like my little 9 year old girl. "The Northern Lights, the Northern Lights, OH MY STARS, don't anyone move" (like the aurora was going to be scared off as a deer in the woods...Ha!) It also felt like one of those movie scenes where an entire bunch of campers ran away from a bear and the smug woodsy geek guy just stood there and turned around only to have a 12 bear growling at him while he was scared spit-less. Thus the reason for my scream at such a rare celestial event as my geek side started to show. Anyway I quickly grabbed my camera as I was shaking like a leaf and out of 20 plus shots only got 8 but I could have not been more happy. I gave myself plenty of time to bask in the rare RED borealis which lasted for 45 minutes. I want to thank each and everyone of you for your comments and hope you enjoy them as much as I did sharing them. R. Christian
Amazing capture! I can see the stars through the borealis! Wow! My compliments and congratulations on your well deserved featured photo in the home page! Best wishes, Suresh

Science tells me that Northern Lights occur only over magnetic poles. Hard to believe such poles are found inland. But ain't science grand?
