Album Info:
Tshukudu Lodge, Genius Loci, near Pretoria, South Africa July 18, 2007. Not a true shrike, this spectacular species is usually placed in the family MALACONOTIDAE which includes the Helmet-shrikes, Bush Shrikes and Puffbacks. Clements calls this bird the Crimson-breasted Gonolek. A rare yellow-breasted form is occasionally seen, and was at first thought to be a separate species. This species is very quick, moving with long leaps on the ground, so I felt lucky to get this photo despite the vegetation blocking part of the bird. Also we were at the edge of its range and did not expect to see it here. Panasonic DMC-LZ5 / Nikon FS 3 / 30XWA / hand-held, no adapter.
