11 June 2008, Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve, Santa Clara County, California. This juvenile Acorn Woodpecker is waiting to get fed. Both sexes have red on the top of the head, but juveniles have dark eyes, while adults usually have white eyes. The birds in California are the large race M. f. bairdi and usually are more heavily marked on the chest than other races. Panasonic DMC-LZ5 / Nikon FS 3 / 30XWA / hand-held, no adapter.
