COPPER-RUMPED HUMMINGBIRD (Saucerottia tobaci erythronotus)
joemorlan > albums > Trinidad and Tobago - Jan 2007
Album Info:
06 January 2007 - Asa Wright Nature Center, Trinidad http://www.asawright.org/ This was the most common Hummingbird on both Trinidad and Tobago, but the birds on Tobago are a different subspecies (larger and less bronze) from the ones on Trinidad. S. t. erythronatus is the subspecies endemic to Trinidad. Earlier authorities (my 1973 edition of "A Guide to the Birds of Trinidad and Tobago" by Richard ffrench) place this species in the genus Amazilla and I have been advised that current thinking will probably merge it back into that genus. This was also the most aggressive of all the hummingbirds we saw, and frequently it would drive off the more sought-after species at the feeders. Sexes are alike. Olympus D-550z (no scope 3X optical zoom). Flash fired. No sharpening filters.
