This rail trail is the remnants of the Port Jervis to Kingston branch of the New York, Ontario & Western Railroad (O & W). It was abandoned when it went bankrupt in the early 1950s. For the next 5.5 miles the Shawangunk Ridge Trail follows this rail trail.
