Coyote Point, San Mateo County, California, USA; 10 November 2007 This was one of several of these large scavengers roosting in the trees near the museum this morning. This is the western subspecies C. a. meridionalis which is smaller and browner than eastern populations and has fewer facial papillae. It is a hatching year bird with the head and bill still mostly dark and with the back of the head still feathered. Panasonic DMC-LZ5 / Nikon FS 3 / 30XWA / hand-held, no adapter.
