Album Info:

Imfolozi-Hluhluwe Game Reserve, Maputaland, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa July 27, 2007. This uncommon Eagle is considered near-threatened in South Africa. Its decline has been attributed to persecution by farmers and loss of forest habitat. This is the sole member of the genus Stephanoaetus, characterized by large size and bold patterning. No subspecies are recognized. The IOC and the African Bird Club call this species, the Crowned Eagle. SASOL calls it the African Crowned Eagle, presumably to distinguish it from Harpyhaliaetus conronatus, the Crowned Eagle (or Crowned Solitary Eagle of the IOC) of South America. Clements and Howard & Moore avoid ambiguity by using the English name Crowned Hawk-Eagle for this African species. Canon PowerShot S3IS.
