Album Info:

Cape Town Pelagic, Cape Province, South Africa, August 1, 2007. These were the common large gull at Cape Town. The taxonomy is complex. Traditionally, two subspecies are recognized, but Jiguet (Bulletin of the BOC 122:50-71, 2002) has suggested that there may be as many as five. South African birds are more massive, have a different head shape and have larger darker eyes. They go by the name L. d. vetula, sometimes called Cape Gull and sometimes treated as a separate species. This split is followed by SASOL but not by Roberts or IOC. Canon PowerShot S3IS.
