  • It's not a vine encircling the dead tree, it's live ohia trees and the flowers it produces (called lehua blossoms)that are in front and on the side of the dead tree. The It only looks like the branches have curled around the old tree but they really haven't. It's because the branches are crooked that make it so interesting. In Hawaii hula dancers make head leis from the lehua blossoms and the buds. Ohia are one of the first trees that grown on the lava fields. It's very striking to see the bright red flowers against the black lava.

  • Nature is creative. That flowering vine is using the remains of that disfigured old tree to climb to sunlight and blossom. Nice shot.
