'Heaven' yes it is. Because it is 'a little piece of heaven fallen to earth', we all know that but how did it come about? Well in the beginning just a few days after God had created the world he noticed it was Sunday which he had already decreed should be a day of rest. But of course God never really rests so on his day off he was pottering about on his design board a tuck here a nip there, you know how it is when you'r in a creative mood and he suddenly looked up from his drawing board and realised he had made something rather out of the ordinary. What he had created was an amalgum of lakes and hills where a westering sea paid tribute and slanted it's light upon it. God scratched his head in wonder and decided that he would call this his greatest natural creation 'the lake district' He sat back, stroked his beard considered his work and thought, well, this might be good enough for a prize and so pushed to the side of his design board, this work is so good I will need to think about exactly where to put it. The next day God got on with designing less important landscapes and countries and when he had run out of ideas for them he set about working on America and as he was doing so, his elbow accidentially knocked 'the lake district' off the edge of his design board, Bugger, he said and looked down to see where on earth it had landed, and too his dismay he saw it fell upon the place he had called Cumbria. Well he thought I am not at all sure about this so he called a grand council of all the angels and he explained the problem. God sent all the angels out into the new universe with the command to find the best place on the best planet to be the spot where his greatest achievement, should be sited. Gabriel and all his angels and cohorts combed the known universe came back and said to God, 'we have searched all the worlds and we have looked down on Cumbria and have found no place where the lake district is better suited and we think you should leave well alone, and God thought OK. Freddie's fable of the lakes.

And there was me thinking it was to do with tectonic plates and glaciers! I guess I have no romance in my soul.
