How amusing is this? Very well captured indeed.We have red squirrels in Scotland but the greys are invading. Unfortunately the American grey carries a virus that wipes out our native reds and has already wiped out thousands of them. It's very rare to see red squirrels here now as a result. The greys are still cute though :-)

And, as an animal lover...I don't think we have to say this is cruelty to animals...I think some people's reactions are to excessive...I mean, I'm shure that the owner of this picture didn't wanted to be cruel to this little squirrel...I mean, rewarding him for doing these tricks is not cruelty...if the squirrel was determinate to leave, I'm shure he would do so...

Shame on you. This is cruelty to an animal. Forcing a squirrel to do this, is cruel, not cute or funny. Your photo was good, but your choice of subject was upsetting.

Congrats, Elly on POTD. My word, what a controversy this beautiful picture of a very happy and contented (I do believe it loves to show off!) squirrel has caused! Ill-informed people certainly had knee-jerk reactions! I accessed Twiggy's website, on the recommendation of Jessica, Editor, Webshots, and louisemassie64, and have just spent a delighted and enthralled quarter of an hour, watching a children's show from 2004 with ?Twiggy no 4? thoroughly enjoying him/her self, accepting treats, swimming to the ski apparatus,performing, and being petted by delighted children. All(four)of Twiggy's full life story was very interesting. By the way, if we allowed dogs to be "natural", they would be roaming in packs, (much like our dingoes in Australia) with disastrous results. If we allowed cats to roam and hunt as they really would want to do if "natural" they would be vermin infested, die young, (but not before they produced many offspring!), and kill off our small animal and bird populations. There are many sides to the controversial subject on the Human/other animals subject, but may I conclude with this: What would happen if humans were all allowed to act "naturally", with no laws, nothing to control our darker sides? Margaret Qld. Au. Animal lover.

Too bad that others will jump to be insulting, and accuse someone of cruelty without learning the facts of the matter. If a squirrel would live to be 27 years old, then that would make it all too obvious that he's not being mistreated, and in fact is being well-cared-for and loved. I have doves, a few of whom I have trained to do simple tricks. The training involved rewarding the animal for doing something unusual that it seemed to want to do, or had a talent for, in the first place--not forcing it to do something against its nature or abusing it in any way. My one dove that is the tamest and does the most tricks is Noel, and he is nearly 20 years old--most doves live to be about 10 or 12 at the most. I think that his interaction with me, and my rewarding him for doing tricks, gives Noel a lot of happiness and makes him feel "special", and thus his unusually long and healthy life. This is an appealing photograph, and very entertaining.
