The 3 piece keel has two joints it it. Old baidarkas had bone pieces inset in the joint. Some speculate that they were wear and bearing surfaces, others that they were there to help position the keel parts for lashing and to prevent lateral slipping of the joint surfaces. I have used a piece of plastic in the joint.
